President Donald Trump will address the nation from the Oval Office on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET to promote his view that there is a "crisis" of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, and that the only way to prevent it from getting worse is to fund his proposed $5.7B wall with U.S. taxpayer money, despite his campaign promise to make Mexico pay for it. The fight over the funding of the wall has led to an 18-day-old partial government shutdown.
The speech will be Trump's first from the Oval Office, and will give him a chance to lay out his case on an issue that has led to the shutdown. Trump plans to visit the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday to promote his anti-migration border wall, which remains the sticking point in negotiations with Democrats to reopen the government.
Trump will "meet with those on the front lines of the national security and humanitarian crisis" at the border, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders posted on Twitter. "More details will be announced soon."
